Review - Latin Links Live
By John Lowry (Thursday 20 April 2006)
Hot Mambo invited John & Cheryl of the Tango Lesson to add a change of pace to their regular Live Wire gig at Treasury Casino, Brisbane on Easter Eve with a Tango demonstration and dance. Hot Mambo, in its full 7 piece format, opened with and outstanding Salsa bracket.
Wendy’s warm lyrics wash over the floor, backed in by the wall of sound from the band The band sounded really welded into an exciting whole, with occasional excellent solos from all the key musos. . Sacha Kloostra was on a high all night on Tumbadoras (Cuban Congas).
At the first break the, by now large, audience were treated to a complete change of pace with a demonstration of traditional and modern Tango from Damian & Tania, Calum & Julieanne and John & Cheryl. The audience enjoyed the change of pace and the excellent performances. When an Argentine asks if you are Argentine, you know you’ve passed the test! A strong contingent of Tango friends and supporters came along (thank you all very much), waiting patiently for a dance at the next bracket.
The band produced another great bracket of excellent Latin and then the Treasury unexpectedly closed the live show due to unforeseen issues with the pre-Easter late licence.
